The Research Component of the Christine Sapienza Colon Cancer Foundation has been set up to raise money to create an endowed research fund for the new Gastrointestinal Research Center at the Lombardi Cancer Center in Washington, DC. The Fund will be named The Christine Sapienza Research Fund.

This named and endowed fund will create a permanent source of funding to help faculty launch new research endeavors, develop new curricular initiatives, acquire scientific equipment, conduct pilot studies before submission for major grant support, and recruit post-doctoral students and other faculty.

The Ruesch Centers’ director Dr. John Marshall, MD, chief of the Division of Hematology-Oncology for Georgetown University Hospital was Chris Sapienza’s oncologist and is an international leader in GI cancer research. He is the President of the International Society of Gastrointestinal Oncology, and just received a $6.75 million dollar gift to start the Ruesch Center. He will be concentrating on an individualized therapy approach, research and development of drugs, a drug discovery program, stimulation of activism and advocacy, and creating a link between patient and information with a nurse navigator.

As we move forward we will continue to raise money for cutting edge research institutions throughout the country.
